There is a large variety of web sites out there, and while all web-masters have to take the web design in to account sites that directly deal with customers and money have extra considerations to make. The most important goal for an e-commerce site is the “conversion”. Conversion rate means the percent of site visitors that turn in to site customers and one of the main factors the generates conversions is the “feel” of the site.
So is there a difference between designing an e-commerce site from say a personal or informational site?
The answer is : YES there is!
Although e-commerce web design and informational web design are similar in execution and concept there exists quite a bit of difference between them but its all in the details…ahh yes must pay attention to the details.
So what makes a site visitor turn in to a customer? Well if that person is already on the e-commerce site that means he/she is looking to buy. However is the “feel” of the site is not good they just wont buy and move to the next site even if they actually fond what they are looking for.
One reason why people are reluctant to buy is lack of trust. When designing and developing an e-commerce site there are three major concerns to take in to consideration: security, convenience, and accessibility.
Security: if the potential customer feels that the on-line transaction he/she is about to make is not secure he/she would rather keep looking for another site than risk it.
Convenience: The payment page and form have to be straight forward don’t turn the customer around before he/she can buy. Also try to incorporate as many payment methods as possible and display the payment logos like Visa/Master card or PayPal as visible as possible.
Accessibility: Make your products easy to find and easy to buy. Once the customer fond the product he/she was looking for if it takes more than one minute for him/her to figure out how to purchase it its over.
A web designer has to be extra careful for these items when designing a e-commerce site. A nice design is important but the design alone won’t make the site sell.
